Collections
The d-Bodhi indoor collections are made of 100% recycled teak wood. This wood has been certified by SmartWood with an FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) label. This leading standard ensures that the wood is recycled and processed according to the highest social and ecological levels. In 2006, d-Bodhi was the first recycled teak furniture company to be FSC certified in the Asia Pacific region.
The reclaimed timber is extracted from neglected buildings or old warehouses and railroad tracks, mainly situated in Central Java. Typically, the wood would have been dismantled and often used for fire wood. The reclaimed teak timbers are also independently audited by both the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and SmartWood to guarantee that they are genuinely reclaimed and salvaged in a responsible manner. The system requires extensive documentation requirements and reporting by the producer. The onus is on us to prove that the wood is what we say it is and the FSC certification is your guarantee. So called "plantation" harvested wood, considering the current enforcement issues and practices in Indonesia, simply do not measure up to our FSC products in terms of environmental sensitivity.
The other factor reducing the environmental footprint of our products compared to plantation harvested wood, is that reclaimed wood, because it has dried and cured naturally over the years, doesn't require extensive industrial drying in massive kilns needing significant amounts of fuel to run, thus increasing carbon emissions and additional wood consumption.
All the furniture and household accessories is manufactured by hand, using age-old traditional methods. No large machines are used so each piece becomes a handmade treasure. d-Bodhi is very dedicated to a zero net waste and all small pieces of wood are taken and bound together to be used for back panels of cabinets, flooring stools but also to make new original furniture such as the Lucy line. Even the sawdust left behind after production is combined with a resin and then cast into lamps, washbasins, and table tops. Can you imagine - that is recycled "recycled" wood!
